RiteTrack Challenge 2010!

Posted by: Joe Nevshemal on 12/22/2010

Every year Handel has what’s known as the "RiteTrack Challenge." This is a challenge to our employees to take advantage of our state-of-the-art software platform, RiteTrack’s framework, to create a solution that solves an every day problembut is not yet a feature in RiteTrack.Throughout each year, aspiring employees use their free time to dream up that solution, create the new features for that solution and ensure that it will work for the demonstration of their solution. At the endof the year, as part of Handel's Christmas festivities, they are presented to the staff and rated by a panel of judges. Top prize for the RiteTrack Challenge is cold hard cash and Handel receives insight to a new possible product to offer.

Last year, one of our teams came up with CoffeeTrack(insert link to video here)which was our software developer’s solution to have RiteTrack brew you a pot in the morning with a tweet, sense when coffee is low and then brew you a new pot, and track those that come to the pot for coffee through visual recognition. It was just one of three entries into the 2009 RiteTrack Challenge. If you wish to learn more about last year's entry, feel free to read more here.

This year, the rules were simple. Entries were judged on the following criteria:

Use of RiteTrack platform

Marketability

Presentation

Overall Concept

Judge's Discretion

Each judge had 20 points maximum they could assign in each category, with a total of 100 points available. Each entry had only 30 minutes to present to the staff of Handel and answer questions.

This year, we were hoping for some great entries, and we were not disappointed. We had a total of three teams this year. Each team took a very unique approach of implementing a RiteTrack solution and solving a problem. But it would be unfair of us to tell you about all three in one blog post. Stay tuned, and each week I will talk about each of our entries.

Okay, I'll let you in on the first one, read about oursoftware development team’s entry this year here. Next week, we will write about how one of the teams created a family management system using RiteTrack. Stay tuned!

"So here's my technology user-interface challenge/revelation: Once I figured out that I could toggle the resistance level on the exercise bike at the UW gym with buttons on the end of the hand-grip, my work out was a lot better. The bike has more prominent arrows on the panel that initially, I would let go of the grip and hit the arrows--this action caused the heart rate monitor to shut off, and it would take an annoyingly long time for the heart rate to come back up. I must've used this machine fifty times or more before I figured it out--I only figured it out because I used an exercise machine with a more intuitive interface at the community rec center, compelling me to look for the EZ toggle buttons on the machine at the UW gym.
