President's Corner: Why Prevention Is Still Far More Cost Effective than Dealing with After-the-Fact Consequences

Posted by: Even Brande on 5/6/2011

At Handel our focus has always been on creating technology that can help workers serving children, youth, and families in the social services field, do their jobs more effectively. As an early adopter of most technology, I am a firm believer that the right technology solutions can help people do their jobs more effectively allowing them to spend more time on their missions and less time on the processes. In our world of social services this means more time for our clients to spend serving their clients and less time doing administrative work. Time and again when visiting our customers I am reminded of the incredibly important work our customers do. Whether it is child welfare, juvenile justice, or assistance for needy families, our clients make a difference in the lives of thousands of less fortunate children, youth, and families every day - 365 days a year.

As healthcare costs continue to skyrocket, it is a comfort to see all of the preventive work our clients do for the populations that they serve. It is a well-known fact that early intervention and preventive work are shorter and more cost effective than belated consequences such as hospitalization, residential care or incarceration. Since our early beginning in the world of juvenile assessment centers, we know that preventive work tends to pay off a lot more in the long run than after-the-fact treatment. This month One.org, a grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, is collecting signatures for funding two new vaccines that will help stop pneumonia and diarrhea—two of the biggest killers of children in poor countries. These are expected to save 4 million young lives over the next 5 years. Just like much of the work our customers do, vaccines are an investment in the future and are considered one of the most cost-effective ways to save lives and prevent disease for a lifetime.  I encourage you to sign this petition today by visiting http://www.one.org/us/actnow/vaccines2011/.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about how RiteTrack can help your organization. Now that the snow has finally melted in most parts of Wyoming, perhaps a visit to Wyoming may be tempting as well?  Wherever you are, have a great spring!

"So here's my technology user-interface challenge/revelation: Once I figured out that I could toggle the resistance level on the exercise bike at the UW gym with buttons on the end of the hand-grip, my work out was a lot better. The bike has more prominent arrows on the panel that initially, I would let go of the grip and hit the arrows--this action caused the heart rate monitor to shut off, and it would take an annoyingly long time for the heart rate to come back up. I must've used this machine fifty times or more before I figured it out--I only figured it out because I used an exercise machine with a more intuitive interface at the community rec center, compelling me to look for the EZ toggle buttons on the machine at the UW gym.
