Handel's Blog

Minimize
A blog from Handel Information Technologies, the maker of RiteTrack, a leading software solution for human service agencies.
The second entry into the RiteTrack Challenge 2010 was a family management program developed on the RiteTrack platform called “Aurora Family Management.” This entry was the brainchild of Ben Sims, Deployment Specialist at Handel Information Technologies, Inc.
Every year Handel has what’s known as the "RiteTrack Challenge." This is a challenge to our employees to take advantage of our state-of-the-art software platform, RiteTrack’s framework, to create a solution that solves an every day problembut is not yet a feature in RiteTrack.Throughout each year, aspiring employees use their free time to dream up that solution, create the new features for that solution and ensure that it will work for the demonstration of their solution. At the endof the year, as part of Handel's Christmas festivities, they are presented to the staff and rated by a panel of judges. Top prize for the RiteTrack Challenge is cold hard cash and Handel receives insight to a new possible product to offer.
What kind of vendors are out there in the world that can provide you with a software solution? There are hundreds of vendors who cover the gambit from completely customized to Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) software. To keep this conversation from becoming too complicated, I have grouped the vendors available into three specific categories: COTS, Configurable, and Custom.
Once you have your team in place and have identified your need, it is best if you are planning on making a major purchase is to write an RFP. I define a major purchase as any software purchase that would cost $100,000.00 or more over three years of the system. This is a good benchmark as an RFP can bog down a purchase that is less without much gain.
Beginning a search for any kind of software can be a daunting task. However, when looking for software to assist tribal governments, one has to be careful on how the task is approached because the initial way the search is approached can dictate the success of the whole process, including events as far out as implementation and use of the software. So before beginning a search, look through what I consider to be a set of key elements to keep in mind.
